Step Up for the Planet: CompuCycle Teams Up With Channel 13 for Our Annual Electronic Recycling Event

With more gadgets than people on the planet, disposing of old devices and preserving our planet’s health is a real challenge. Earth Day is both an annual reminder of our responsibility to protect the environment and an opportunity to make real change. To honor Earth Month, CompuCycle in Houston, TX is teaming up with Channel 13 to host a special e-waste recycling event on April 19th from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Do you have outdated electronics (e-waste) lying around your home or office? Instead of letting this e-waste gather dust or throwing it away to end up in a landfill, drop it off to be responsibly recycled at CompuCycle for free! We are located at 8019 Kempwood Drive, Houston, Texas 77055.

The Urgency of e-waste Management

Even the World Health Organization recognizes e-waste as a major concern. Shockingly, in 2019 alone, an estimated 53.6 million tons of e-waste was produced worldwide, with only 17%  properly collected and recycled. In the U.S. we are doing a little better at 35% but there’s still a long way to go.

Electrical and electronic devices contain harmful substances. While these substances typically don’t pose a risk during normal use, they can be released into the environment if devices are not properly managed when they become waste, or dumped in a landfill. Unsafe practices release toxic pollutants – like dioxins, lead, and mercury – polluting the air, soil, dust, and water. Once released, these pollutants can travel long distances, harming people far away.

Small Steps for a Better Carbon Footprint

Ben Franklin wasn’t talking about electronics recycling when he said “Little strokes fell great oaks,” but he could have been. Each device recycled may seem insignificant on its own, but collectively, they contribute to significant positive change.

The benefits of e-waste recycling go beyond protecting people and the planet. Circular economies aim to reduce waste and make the most of resources by using products and materials for as long as they can. Instead of just using things once and throwing them away, we try to design products and systems that can be used again and again. This includes things like reusing items, recycling materials, and finding ways to make new things from old ones. The goal is to be smarter about how we use resources and make sure we’re not wasting valuable materials. So recycling these materials also ensures a steady supply of goods important in our daily lives.

One ton is 2,000 pounds. And the average desktop is 22 pounds. If just 90 people, or one medium-sized corporation, brought in their desktop computers that would be a ton (literally) of responsibly recycled e-waste. The more individuals and corporations recycle – and share information about how they do it – the closer we all get to a recycling tipping point.

Electronic Recycling Made Easy

At the Earth Day Recycling Event, CompuCycle will accept a wide range of electronics from individuals and businesses who want to optimize ITAM. We are happy to take all electronics of any age, working or non-working. Some of the most recycled household e-waste we see includes:

  • Computers
  • Routers
  • Laptops
  • Power Cords
  • Monitors
  • Printers
  • Cell Phones

While companies bring us items such as:

  • Computers and Laptops
  • Network Equipment, Routers, Switches, Modems
  • Cell Phones, Pagers, iPhones, Blackberry, etc.
  • Video Devices: Cameras, VHS/DVD Players, Cable Boxes
  • Circuit Boards and Electronic Components

There are also items CompuCycle is unable to accept. For residential recyclers, things like vacuum cleaners, larger CRT TVs, and appliances are don’ts. On the don’t list for corporate partners are things like smoke alarms, air conditioners, and solar panels. CompuCycle offers a complete list of accepted items for easy reference.

Avoid the Wait for Earth Day 2024 Recycling

Our annual Earth Day recycling event is a big day for CompuCycle and the city of Houston, so if lines are long, rest assured that you can drop off your electronics for recycling Monday through Friday during CompuCycle’s business hours.

For corporations in need of secure pick-up services, CompuCycle offers arrangements through our Customer Care Team. This ensures that businesses can dispose of their electronics in a secure and environmentally friendly manner without the hassle of long wait times.

CompuCycle Wants to Be Your Sustainability Partner

Whether you are part of a company aiming for better IT Asset Management or an individual with a closet full of old electronics, the CompuCycle/Channel 13 Earth Day Recycling Event is a way to take concrete steps towards a cleaner, safer world.

Corporate sustainability and individual responsibility go hand in hand in reshaping the future. By responsibly disposing of outdated or unused devices, we can all prevent harmful substances from contaminating our environment while saving important resources. The true definition of a win-win.

So mark your calendars, spread the word, and let’s come together to make this Earth Day count.
